WASP 178

WASP 178 is the newest polling skiff for the Texas Gulf Coast, coming from Seadrift, Texas, built by

B & D Boat Works, LLC (Beck & David’s Fiberglass), of Seadrift, TX

The WASP 178 is all composite and hand laid fiberglass.  The stringers are in a grid system and foam filled.  The deck is also foam filled.  The console is removable for easy access.  All aluminum features are drilled and tapped, so there are no screws in the deck. The upholstery is by POC UPHOLSTRY in Port O’Connor, TX. Aluminum is by Dooleys Welding in Port Lavaca, TX.  The walking gunnels allow you to go all the way around the boat without getting down on the deck. The Polling Platform is moved forward to distribute weight forward and allows the motor to be raised with no issues. The fuel tank is in the front along with the battery.  The aft seat has storage under it. It has 2 large storage boxes in the rear and 1 in the bow.   The hatches are fiberglass, and all screws are drilled and tapped.

The Wasp 178 is designed to run quietly and shallow, so it is easy to sneak up on the fish. It is perfect for two people to fish the flats using a trolling motor or to Poll.  It was designed by the working man for the working man.  It is a local Texas Polling Skiff made in Seadrift, TX, designed for the Texas Coast skinny waters.

We (Beck & David’s Fiberglass) have been repairing boats for 16 years and have seen what works and what doesn’t work, so we have designed the WASP 178 for easy access to everything. No crawling in spaces to get to nuts and bolts, it’s all drill and tapped in Aqua Steel. No screw holes for water to leak into the deck. No bolts or screws in the console it’s all Weld Mount fasteners throughout the boat. The design of the boat with the V in the bow allows it to break the chop when crossing big water, and no slap when in the shallows, and the tunnel is designed to allow maximum water to the prop while allowing effective running/drifting in the skinny water and ease of turning.  It is low sided, so the wind doesn’t catch it when drifting.

We wanted a boat to be user friendly and that’s what we feel we have accomplished with the WASP 178.  We have taken ideas from all the boats and incorporated the best ideas into ours. It is set up with a center console and remote steering.
